Can Payment for Continuing Healthcare Ever be stopped?

Long term care is one of the most important aspects of life which is why it is considered very carefully in the life of an elderly person. The elderly as they age need much love and concern to be shown to them which is why it is best to make sure that long term care payments are made on a regular basis. Whether for residential care homes of residential care home with nursing care, it is best to make sure there are only the best continuing healthcare programs in place to make sure the elderly persons need are well catered for. Over the years, there have being so many elderly that have had their continuing healthcare payments waived off or withdrawn following re-assessment. And mostly these re-assessments are based on the present conditions of the elderly persons health. Some elderly might have certain diseases that might lead to them needing extra or special care and this is why the family can request a further assessment for continuing healthcare to be paid for by the NHS.

So many people do not believe that it is possible to do that however; it is. With cost of home care fees increasing by the day, it is only normal that most families with elderly who need extra special care seek help from the local authority and their local PCT (Primary Care Trust). Apart from the fact that an insurance policy can cover the elderly and entire home care payments can be made by them, those in receipt of continuing healthcare by the HNS should be aware that the payment can be stopped after a re evaluation of them medical condition.

Also, there are so many people that have applied for re-assessment but instead found it very difficult to get continuing care paid for them. This however if you have been paying care home fees since 2004 and you feel that this should have been provided free of charge under the continuing care program it may be possible to make a claim to have the fees repaid to you or the family if the person who received care has now died. There is however a deadline for making a claim which is September 2012. (more...)

Residents of Scotland Should Only Pay for the Care They Need

A large area of Scotland is a rural countryside, and the small communities suffer common problems, which many people living in more populated regions take for granted such as proximity to medical facilities shops, petrol stations as well as other trade and professional services. As people grow older, paying for long term care in Scotland becomes a part of their budget, however the lack of close and appropriate facilities means that most of them rely on other people, and are reluctant to leave their homes.

In order for an individual to receive personal care or payments from their Scottish local authority, they will need to have an assessment done by a local social worker to determine if the need the help and the types of personal care at home vary depending on one’s care needs as assessed by a social worker.

If you are aged 65 in Scotland, you should receive the service free of charge, but you may need to pay for non personal care needs such as laundry, day care, and cleaning. However, this does not affect your entitlement to care component on disability living allowance or attendance allowance. Conversely, if you are aged below 65, your benefits are means tested by your local authority, and you only benefit based on a particular criteria depending on your needs. (more...)

How Local Authorities Deal with Funding Long Term Care

At one point or another one may begin to think about long term care. This is an important factor to everyone’s lives as it will allow them to benefit during times of poor health during their old age. However, there are a lot of rules and restrictions involved in being eligible for long term care. Knowing all about long term care and the rules and restrictions apply to it is imperative if one wishes to receive help during their elder years. The following will provide a basic overview of what is involved in the procedure of long term care assessment.

Once an individual has decided they want to apply for long term benefits, they must complete a long term care means test performed by the local authority. During this long term care means test the local authority will not only decide if you are eligible for funding, but how much assistance you are allowed to receive. The means test is based off of the income amount and how much is in one’s savings and investments. It is important that your assets were never sold on or given away deliberately as this can greatly hinder your ability to claim means tested benefits.

There are three kinds of funding available to the public. The first type of funding is the disability living allowance (DLA). This type of funding is only available if the person has applied for the claim before they reach the age of 65. Next is the attendance allowance, which is available to individuals of the age 65 and older. Lastly, if you are in a nursing home and receiving care you may be eligible for the Registered Nursing Care Contribution. This benefit is paid upto £101pw in England. The Registered Nursing Care Contribution can be paid directly to the nursing home with the result of it offseting the cost of care. (more...)

How Will Proposed Changes from the Government Affect Those Needing Long Term Care?

The long term care policy or scheme is very common in England and those people who are not medically fit or those who are not able to meet the expenses of expensive medication are making the most of it. Generally, it is for about 90 days but depending on the condition it can be extended. So, one with extremely poor health can get it for more than 90 days.

Since, there are various loopholes in this policy therefore; the government of England constituted an independent committee on July 20, 2010 to provide various recommendations in order to improve the system of funding for care. This report was termed as the Dilnot report . Various recommendations were presented by the committee and they are under consideration whether government should implement them or not.

At present one has to pay the premium throughout the life no matter if he or she uses the policy or not. Therefore, the committee proposed that a cap should be implemented and after that person should be eligible for the lifetime support. As per the recommendations the cap was suggested to be between £25,000 and £50,000. (more...)
